In September 2014, a full-time highly qualified and experienced sports coach post was established to deliver PE lessons throughout school from EYFS to Year 6, and raise the profile of PE. Further to this the sports coach worked with the teachers to develop staff skill. As a result, higher quality PE lessons are delivered on a daily basis. The current sports premium funding is approximately £15,000 per annum. The sports premium has gone towards our sports coach and equipment which enables us to provide free sports clubs and travel to competitions.
One measure of the impact of use of sports premium money is that, in September 2017 Nicol Mere was awarded the Gold Mark recognising the impact of sport across the school.
Clubs Impact - to be updated Autumn 2017
A questionnaire (Feb 2015) showed that around 50% of the school’s children have accessed after school clubs or lunch time sessions this year. This ‘no cost’ approach has improved participation levels. Sports covered at this level have been gymnastics, hockey, basketball, football, rugby, netball, mixed games, cricket, tennis & golf. Furthermore, our children asked for a dance after school club to be organised within the questionnaire. We listened and in the summer term we have arranged for two street dance clubs to be formed.
From the summer term of 2015, there were a phenomenal 12 after school club or lunch time sessions on offer each week. This will provide fantastic opportunities to encourage gifted and talented children to emerge.
Since 2014 our school has invested in new sports equipment to aid the quality of sports provision. From new bibs, cones and balls to 6 new basketball nets for both indoor and outdoor use, we now boast a fantastic array of sports equipment to ensure the delivery of PE is both stimulating and enjoyable for our pupils.
Sporting events Impact
Through the ‘Sainsbury’s School Games’ ( https://www.yourschoolgames.com/about-the-games ) and local school cluster organisation, Nicol Mere has been involved in an increased number of competitions. Our sports coach has organised teams for both practice and attendance of events with success in a number of competitions. The school has also organised regular intra school competitions for all year groups. Through these experiences our children have developed their teamwork skills and ability to listen and support each other.

CPD & LEA Link Impact
Since 2012, the school has been running a staff PE CPD program. In addition, the school engages in the Schools Sports Partnership within the Wigan area along with LEA PE coordinator courses. We have also committed to the CPD of the sports coach through courses provided by Sport England with the aim of ensuring our school continues to work with innovative sports delivery ideals.
As a result, our PE coordinator is confident of delivering lessons and providing resources for the teaching staff to follow to ensure high standards and continuity throughout the PE in school. Through CPD we aim to keep all staff skilled in teaching effective and outstanding lessons.
Our aim is to stimulate our children into a lifelong love for sport. We have developed links with local sports clubs outside of school and help children make contact to take their interest in sport further.
